Endings and Beginnings

Dear St. Paul Yoga Center Community,

As we near the end of 2020, it is natural to look back and to look forward. It will no doubt take a long time to fully digest the events and consequences of 2020, but we can find some words to describe it. Intense. Tumultuous. Disrupting. Clarifying.

What will we bring forward from 2020, and what will we leave behind? A New Year's ritual that I was taught many years ago involves making two lists. The first list is everything you want to leave behind in the year that has just ended. That list is then discarded. In the yoga world, we talk about "being present." This is about reconnecting your mind to the present moment. (Your body and breath are already there!) We ignore or forget the past at our own peril, though. As philosopher George Santayana wrote, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

The second list is everything you want to invite into your life and the world in the year ahead. The second list is sealed in an envelope and not opened until the end of the year. This second list plants seeds by creating clear intentions.

At the end of the year, it can be surprising to see which of these seeds have germinated, including some that you may have forgotten about.

The New Year's invitation list is similar to a yoga concept called "sankalpa." A sankalpa is a clear intention, one which connects to your life's purpose. It can remind you of your true nature. New Year's resolutions, on the other hand, tend to be judgment-based. Because of this, we tend to judge ourselves for the things we are doing (or not doing) that we make resolutions about. There is no reason, however, that a New Year's resolution can't also be a sankalpa. If we let go of judgment, our resolutions can come from a place of greater self-acceptance. This, in turn, can lead to greater acceptance of others. May 2021 be a year of deep connectedness and interconnectedness!

"You must ask for what you really want. Don't go back to sleep."  -Rumi

6-Week Sacred Texts/Yoga Philosophy Class with William Prottengeier

Sacred Yoga Texts Sacred Yoga Texts

Learning about the historical and philosophical context of yoga can help us better understand how and what to practice. Given the 5000 years of yoga history, we can benefit from having a guide, someone who can bring these teachings to life and unpack the sometimes cryptic or seemingly contradictory teachings.

These classes start Thurs., Jan. 14th, from 6:30-8:30 pm. You can sign up for an individual class or take the whole series (with a $15 discount for taking the whole series). William has taught yoga and yoga philosophy for over forty years! These classes promise to be thought-provoking and educational. Please join us!
